Sen. Majority Leader Bill Frist, frustrated by the sluggish debate over immigration reform at the committee level, plans to introduce a bill that deals solely with border security as early as today.....
Republican aides say the move by Mr. Frist is not meant to trump similar legislation offered by Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Arlen Specter, Pennsylvania Republican, but rather as an "insurance policy" to ensure the topic is addressed.
Mr. Frist's bill, according to aides, would simply take Mr. Specter's proposal and strip out the guest worker plan and provisions dealing with illegal aliens already in the U.S.
Mr. Specter's legislation has stalled in committee over his proposal to criminalize illegal aliens already here as well as other issues. His bill would allow employed illegal aliens to remain in the United States indefinitely, although it would require them to return home before applying for permanent citizenship.

Lofgren may have really good intentions to help several of us by introducing these 'sensible' administrative fixes but with meetings/discussions like these, they would get no where. Lofgren seems to be a very soft-spoken person and if she is the moderator (or even a mediator) in these discussions, there is just no way the train will stay on the track.
No wonder, the govtrack/thomas websites say, this is the first step in the process. They get discussed (or its lack of) and may get killed right away.
Besides just beating their own drum and saying ga-ga about their efficiency and sometimes throwing words like "we have opportunities" to improve, the discussion was a disaster.
On the other hand, it may be that most of them have already made their mind up as to what to do and this is just a charade. The discussion is a way to show their due diligence. The decision is obscure akin to the anything related to the process..

Just dropped a check for $5. I hope all of the remaining members do the same.
Mailing a check is just as good as a bill pay.
For those who are unaware as to what the "Bill Pay" option is, basically the Bill pay option is a great way to take advantage of your bank cutting a cheque as opposed to you cutting a cheque. That way you can write cheques without having to:
1) Actually write out a cheque
2) Spend money to post it (and take the extra effort to mail the cheque out).
Keep the contributions flowing.

1. Please throw your valuable thoughts on I-9 Employment autorization. My daughter is got a job and recuruiter asked for I-9 ( immigration document).
Do you need to print from INS office and fillup and send to respective college or INS.

Hi,
Did anyone get a SSN with their passport expired?
My passport expired in April and the Romanian embassy doesn't renew passports for people who are not US permanent residents or citizens. What I could do was to make a letter of representation for someone in my country, get it certified at one of the Romanian consulates and send all the ORIGINAL documents thru mail in Romania. Since I'm a full time graduate student, even finding time to go to the nearest consulate was almost impossible. I was also worried that we might be asked to show up for an interview and would not have documents like passport or marriage certificate in hand. I talked to the lawyer and she said that if I don't plan to travel abroad, not having a valid passport is ok.
Yesterday I got the plastic card and today I went to apply for a SSN. The lady I talked to refused to take my application, saying that my Romanian passport is considered an "immigration document" and until I have an unexpired one, I should not try to get a SSN. Call me crazy, but since I am a permanent resident doesn't it mean I don't have to leave USA unless I want to???? And even more, how can a document issued by a foreign country be an immigration document, since I'm not applying for SSN based on a visa stamped in that passport.

The status of AP seems to be changing practically everyday. The message (document mailed) first appeared on Jan 7, Then changed to Jan 8 with same message and today I see a date change in my portfolio (last updated section). Not sure when the document will actually get mailed...

These people were not eligible for EB2 when they filed their own labor.. so they should NOT BE ALLOWED TO PORT THEIR OLD PDs. Sure EB3 can Interfile .. but you will get a new PD ... the date you interfile.
I am really sorry to say that you are totally wrong. Do you know that high demand very well paid jobs also fall into EB3 category. Example Pharmacists fall into EB3(for whom there is a very huge demand in US due to aging population) .
It is not easy to get a Pharmacist license. They need a degree in pharmacy(Equivalent to Pharm D in US) . If he/she is a foreign graduate he/she has to go through national level TSE/TOEFL, FPGEE , NAPLEX and state level Jurisprudence exams. A total of 5 exams and 1600-2000 hours of internship.Even US citizens think twice to go pharmacy colleges because it is really expensive to pay the fee.
This is just an example and this is our personal experience.

My guess is , The new president appears to be strict. So his question to the department very soon will be "What the heck you've been doing with all these cases not touched so far. So they want to do their part even before the big boss asks them. So that way the only issue will be lack of numbers, else everything is ready and look, we did our job. We're very efficient :)

I have just talked local Congresswoman's Office and I have talked to a staff member for 1 hour and she is helping me. She is going to call NSC and get to the root cause of this problem.

Pappu, I agree what you are saying. But the bigger issue here is the awareness.. I talk to so many friends and friend's friend. The only thing that I find is they are not aware of IV or its effort.
Lack of awareness is another issue for IV community to form a lobby group like others.
IV has too many contacts in the media, would that not be a great idea to leverage them to advertise at prime time on Indian channels , or just the google ads on Dishnetwork screen for cheap or work out something.
Just to get the people an awareness of what IV is and get them a feeling that its BIG enough to help them. Support some candidates in the election, just to get the name floating. Leave aside the American, Indians or chinese(mostly the legal immigrants) I sometime work with don't know anything about IV. I go to SFO meet my parents almost every month and my brother's circle (all citizens) have no idea of what I am talking about. All they know there was problem is Labor clearance in their time which is no more now.
What is IV , who is IV........ no idea at all. NADA.
A planned campaign to make th awareness can help our cause.

After passing this bill politicians will cosy up and say good things to rebuild relations. The real impact can happen if Indians in New York state who can vote stand up against such laws. Same goes for the Desi companies who have tried to raise the voice against USCIS memo. They lack grassroots advocacy and support. Their Indian US citizen friends are busy organizing Diwali melas and Shahrukh Khan stage shows. Immigration voice can be extremely successful if politicians see us as an immigrant lobby. Just like they see Jewish lobby or Hispanic lobby. This is why participation of IV greencard members and citizen friends is important to advocate for changes that helps the immigrant community. I this case too, IV community should not turn a blind eye to what happens around us. Just because we do not work for such companies or we already have EAD does not mean we do not see beyond the headline of this issue. We spend more time analyzing , over analyzing, predicting and tracking rather than actively understanding the politics of issues that are causing all the problems we are facing. To some extent this law passed because Indians in USA did not care due to their narrow outlook and priorities in politics.
